PoCo Heritage has thousands of old photos, newspapers and artifacts in it's archives. Over time of course this material will deteriorate, especially when subject to handling. Although it had been discussed for some time, in 2009 a decision was made by the board of directors to begin work on scanning as much of the photo content as possible. Much of this had already been catalogued but it was an entirely manual process. Scanning, cataloging and adding descriptions is meticulous and time consuming work and it has taken the extensive time and effort of several volunteers to get the project to where it is now. We are also extremely grateful to have received some grant money from both CIBC and the City of Port Coquitlam (pending final approval) to assist with the purchase of hardware and software to facilitate the digital archiving.
But what good is a digital archive if it is not available to be viewed by the public? That is the next step that we are currently working on, the start of which you see here now. As new content is added to the digital archive we will also add it to our online database, in phases. So far we only have a few hundred items online but we hope to expand this as volunteer time and resources permit. We also hope to offer additional services such as purchasing of photos, online research requests and so on. So keep checking back, its an exciting project and one which will improve and evolve over time. If you like working with computers, databases and images, or if you are a history buff, this project may be interesting to you.
