A Day at the Museum, A Contest for Kids
PoCo Heritage is interested in hearing from the Community on what makes a Museum INTERESTING and FUN!!! We are challenging all Port Coquitlam residents to go to and / or to take their children to at least one museum this summer, and to let us know what they liked best about the museum. We are attempting to involve youth with a story-writing contest that we are running this summer and fall called "A Day at the Museum". We are looking for written submissions from children with their thoughts about what makes a museum fun and / or interesting and informative. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories. As we plan for a future museum, we believe it is important to have a facility that will attract and capture the interest of younger generations, individually, with their families and through school programs.

Heritage Building Inventory Complete
Members and friends of the Heritage Society recently completed an exhaustive walkthrough of the entire city to come up with an updated inventory of potential heritage buildings. This inventory will be used as an important input to the Heritage Conservation Plan now being created. The sites will be mapped and then key heritage buildings and areas will be identified from this map. Look for this final map to be posted here sometime in the near future.

Museum Development Team holds inaugural meeting
It's a lofy goal, to launch a community museum for the City of Port Coquitlam on or before our centennial in March of 2013. Now with the verbal support of mayor and council, and an initial project plan in place, it's time for the team to get to work. Under the leadership of new PCHCS Director Janet Harvey, the team held it's kickoff meeting May 5, 2009. The rest of the team includes Dave Allen, Julie Schmidt, Konni Bernaschek and Steve Smith. The board will make recommendations to the overall PCHCS board of directors and will liase with city council and other groups to "Get it Built" At this point there are more questions than answers and a seemingly endless stream of tasks to complete, but Rome wasn't built in a day, right? Look for more updates, plans and schedules to be posted here in the upcoming months. Also, we are looking for help with event planning, grant writing, fundraising and more. Please see the get involved section for contact details.

Funds set aside for Heritage Conservation Plan
A heritage conservation plan is something that has been talked about for several years, and now we are happy to announce that this is one step closer to realization. The City of Port Coquitlam, under consultation with the SIC (Social Inclusion) committee has agreed to set aside up to $25,000 for the creation of this plan. The majority of this cost is for the hiring of a Heritage consultant to liase with the various stakeholders and present a recommendation to mayor and council sometime later this year. This will be a significant first step towards preserving our remaining heritage structures.

Lobb House Proposal Rejected by City Council
After countless hours spent by our team, including a good part of Thanksgiving Holiday, a formal proposal was put to City Council to move the Charles Lobb house to a location, currently owned by the city and operate the house, at least partially, as a museum. The proposal commited the Heritage Society to $250,000 in fundraising over the next 10 years to help cover the costs of the move and upgrades. Even with this aggresive target city council rejected the proposal in a special session of council. The vote was close (4-3). Here is a link to the city staff's recommendation to council (PDF file).
